A draw is sufficient for India to book a berth in the semi-final of SAFF Championship 2011. But the team wants to go for a win straightaway against Sri Lanka in their last league match today. If India plays out a draw, they will have 5 points and will qualify alongwith Afghanistan given that the Afghans win against Bhutan which is very likely. On the other hand only a win can propel Sri Lanka through. So, India have not qualified yet and the coach Savio Medeira is cautious. In an interview to the-aiff.com, he said
We need to cautious. They are sure to come all guns blazing. We need to plan everything to perfection
Sri Lanka had defeated Bhutan 3-0 but in the very next match, Afghanistan brought them crashing down with a 3-1 defeat. Given this scenario, there is very remote chance of India not reaching the semis. Savio wants to play his winning combination against Sri Lanka. But there is a possibility of Steven Dias starting instead of Anthony Pereira. He might also rest Rocus Lamare and field Jewel Raja to get him fresh for the semi-final match.
Sunil had sustained an ankle injury during the Bhutan match which troubled him in the practice session. But the X-Ray report suggested there is no damage to the bone and he is expected to play in the match.
Sunil will look to continue his good form. He has scored 3 goals in 2 matches and won MoM award in both of them. But the form of Jeje Lalpekhluah should worry India. One of the most promising stars Jeje is finding it difficult to slot the ball home. Sri Lanka match might be the perfect time for him to start scoring again.
Sri Lanka on the other hand will look to play all out as not winning is not an option for them. Nipuna Bandara, who scored 2 goals against Bhutan will have to spearhead the attack.
