Indian Goalie Gurpreet Singh can play in Europe – John Burridge

Yet again another Indian goalkeeper caught attention with his consistent performances.

East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who is the first choice goalkeeper of Indian u-22 squad and has captained the side in many occasion,  has caught eyes of British coach and football expert John Burridge. John Burridge is a popular figure as a football expert with a popular TV channel and is currently employed with UAE-based Al Wasl Club, where Diego Maradona is head coach. In his playing days, he was goalkeeper of clubs like Blackpool, Wolves, Aston Villa, QPR, Southampton, Newcastle United and many other British clubs and after that became a part of coaching staff of Oman National Team. He has been instrumental in training Ali Al Habsi and helped him join English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers (now playing for Wigan Athletic). He has also coached many English goalkeepers, including Paul Robinson.

Local media agency, Muscat Daily, has reported that Burridge has been closely monitoring Gurpreet’s progress of late, showing a keen interest in coaching the youngster so that he can someday make it to an European league football. Burridge said, “I have come from Dubai to follow Gurpreet’s progress. From my experience, I can tell you that he has a lot of potential. If he gets proper training, he can surely play in the UK. Burridge has also been advising the 20 yr. old custodian on different aspects of his game.”

Burridge also said that Gurpreet has the attributes like height, youth and hardworking attitude which are required for being a top goalkeeper. He expressed his interest of training him for six to seven months before he can present him in Europe.

In Muscat, Burridge is being accompanied by Joe Morrison, presenter with the TV channel. Morrison echoed  Burridge and agreed that Gurpreet is a good talent and deserves a chance to taste top professional football in Europe.

Like Ali Al Habsi made Oman famous in football, Indian football also needs a star player. We see Gurpreet as a good prospect. – Joe Morrrison
