4. Fernando Torres (Liverpool to Chelsea)
Surely a striker who scored 65 goals in 102 EPL games and won the World Cup wouldn’t be a complete disaster of a signing, or would he? As Torres finally left Liverpool for Chelsea on transfer deadline day of January 2011 for a British record £50 million, double the amount the Reds paid to sign him on from Atletico Madrid; nobody in the footballing world would’ve known what lay in front of someone who was once regarded as the best centre forward in the world. A paltry 20 goals in 110 EPL appearances and eventually leaving the London club on a free transfer, Fernando Torres’ Chelsea career took him from the heights of world-class down to bang average in 3 seasons. A Roman Abramovich signing, Torres simply never found his feet at Chelsea as he failed to lead the Chelsea line or adapt to their game or should one say Chelsea simply never played to his strengths. Torres’ time in England saw him rise to the best in the league down to mediocre at times. A sad climax, so to speak, to a promising January signing.
