3) Virgil van Djik
Celtic’s Dutch central defender is another one of the many names linked with Arsenal over the past few weeks. With interest from England, Celtic have permitted van Djik to talk to clubs but are holding out for a big money move from their British counterparts. Speaking about Celtic and his future to the press van Djik said, ‘I am now 23 and have played at Willem II, FC Groningen and Celtic and am now linked to clubs like Arsenal. Isn’t that great?’ Speaking about the Scottish clubs plans as far as his career is concerned he said, ‘There are a lot of clubs interested, but Celtic is holding on to a big transfer fee. The club is clear: they don’t want to let me go in the winter, because we’re playing for four trophies. I understand the point of view from the club and I see it as a compliment that they don’t want to let me go.’
A composed yet physical centre-half van Djik is exactly the kind of player Arsenal have been known to sign. With huge potential and a long career ahead of the Dutchman; van Djik comes across as a great investment for Wenger and Arsenal. Valued at around £10 million, Celtic are in no hurry whatsoever to let go of one of their prized assets as a mouth-watering Europa League clash against Inter Milan awaits on the other side of January. It’s now down to Wenger and how bad does he need a defender for the rest of the season.
