Indian football team coach Stephen Constantine has announced the list of players who will travel to Laos for their first encounter in the AFC Asia Cup 2019 Qualifiers.
The team has suffered from injuries, latest casualty being the the defensive midfielder (DM) Vineet Rai. This has reduced the squad to 19-members plus Sumeet Passi, who seems to be a permanent adjunct to the Indian football team despite questionable performances.
Midfielders Rowlin Borges, Pronay Halder, Cabin Lobo, Bikash Jairu and defender Augustine Fernandes are the other players who will be missing the tour due to injuries.
The team list is as follows:
GOALKEEPERS: Subrata Paul, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Amrinder Singh.
DEFENDERS: Rino Anto, Keegan Pereira, Pritam Kotal, Arnab Mondal, Sandesh Jhingan, Chinglensana Singh, Fulganco Cardozo, Narayan Das.
MIDFIELDERS: Udanta Singh, Halicharan Narzary, Seityasen Singh, Md. Rafique, Eugenson Lyngdoh, Jackiechand Singh, Alwyn George.
FORWARDS: Sumeet Passi, Jeje Lalpekhlua, Sunil Chhetri.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu recently did India proud by appearing in the European 1st division match, apparently the first ever Indian to do so. BTW, can anyone tell me at which level did Mohammad Salim play for Celtic FC back in the 1930s? I’m confused.
Sumeet Passi remains a favourite of the Indian coach despite all-round criticisms and continuous shocking performances in the recently held South Asian Games. He has, of course, scored in a couple of games in the I-League for Sporting Clube de Goa. But let’s not pretend, I-League is I-League and the goals were against mediocre teams like Shillong Lajong and Mumbai FC.
Having said that, Bikash Jairu was also ridiculed for long but Constantine persisted with him and he has now emerged as a promising hard working player. So let us hope that Passi will come good in time (*mouths* How?).
India vs Laos will kick off on 2nd June at 5 PM Indian Standard Time. There is most likely to be India vs Laos live streams available online, we will post the link. If telecast happens at all, it will be on Sony ESPN. For more info, visit Indian Football Forum
