The Poster Boy of football winning the Golden Ball deservedly, or did he ?

Messi golden ball controversy

The FIFA World Cup 2014 didn’t all end in disappointment for Lionel Messi despite losing out to Germany in the final as the poster boy of football was awarded the Golden Ball ahead of the likes of James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben. However, the Argentine didn’t receive the award without criticisms as he received plenty of it.

The likes of Diego Maradona calling Messi winning the Golden Ball as a marketing strategy quite simply summarized the thoughts of many in the football world. In comparison to the other candidates, Messi does hold his own with his 4 goals driving Argentina to the finals but take into consideration how far lowly Columbia came riding on the back of a young James Rodriguez or the midfield masterclass of Toni Kroos that earmarked Brazil’s worst ever World Cup performance or even the fiery Dutch wing-wizard Arjen Robben. Messi certainly didn’t have it easy and while everyone else is left to suspect what FIFA were thinking when they awarded Messi the Golden Ball, the Argentine added yet another trophy to his growing illustrious trophy cabinet.
